9/11 Commemoration: 10 NYC Photo Essays

In commemoration of the 9/11 attacks on New York City ten years ago, we’ve gathered 10 photo essays from around the web. But not only those showing the tragic events in lower Manhattan. Instead, we would also like to showcase and celebrate other aspects of the city as well. New York is back up and running as it should, a testament to the strong will of the people there. I remember my first time in the the city in 2002, and it filled me with awe and excitment, and has each time that I’ve been back. Here’s to all the innocent people who suffered, and to never having to photograph something like this again.

This series is impressive not only for its “big picture” format but also for the fact the photos are in color. Highly recommended.

Quiksilver Pro New York Surf Contest

Unbeknownst to many, New York is home to some darn good surf. The pro tour came to the city for the first time ever and wrapped up in amazing waves just before the 9/11 anniversary. After which, NY’s finest and bravest (police vs firefighters) took to the water for a friendly contest.

New York in Black & White

I guess if you’re going to do a photo series about New York, you have to include some historial black & white photos. Well, here they are, and they are amazing, going back into the early 1900s. It’s amazing how many skykscrapers they had so early.

My Visits to the Big Apple

Here are some of my own photo albums from two trips to NYC in 2006 and 2009. I was pretty pleased with the shots I got from the air. My film shots from my first 2002 visit will have to wait for another time.
