New Canon Lenses: 24-70 f/4L IS & 35 f/2 IS USM

Canon recently hit us with the 24-70mm f/4L IS and the EF 35mm f/2 IS. You might be thinking…what?!

Especially priced at $1,500 for the zoom and $850 for the prime, respectively.

But there is more than meets the eye. Let’s take a look at these two lenses in detail, and who might find them useful…

So what do you get when you chop off 35mm from the popular 24-105L, add 0.7x macro capabilities, and about $400 on top. You get this new lens. To be fair, it will probably come with increased sharpness and corner performance, and hopefully a wide end that is not jammed too closely together (like the 24-105 IS). You access macro mode by switching the lock button up, then extended the zoom to the macro position. And it’s hybrid IS should help when shooting macro.

It’s not a bad looking lens, but I’m not sure what the market is for an f/4 zoom in this range. Especially at this price point. I’d rather get a fast prime, or a dedicated macro. But it should be sharper than the 24-105L with it’s smaller zoom range. The lighter and smaller form factor will be welcome. And it’s worth noting that the 24-105L was priced exactly the same (in Japan) when it was released, so we may see this one slide down the price scale. We’ll see…

Following on the heels of the 24mm and 28mm f/2.8 IS lenses, Canon releases this new one with an even faster aperture – a joy for prime shooters.

The original 35mm f/2 has been a popular, budget-friendly lens for a long time, but with no USM, it is slightly long-in-the-tooth. The addition of IS and USM will be very welcome for those who need and desire it – especially videographers.

But again, the price leaves you scratching your head. And who exactly has been asking for this lens? Haven’t more people been yearning for an updated 50mm 1.4, even one with IS? Here’s to hoping for that in the future.
