Nikon Mirrorless 1-Series

Posted by The A-Team on

The big news recently is all about Nikon’s new 1-series cameras: the J1 and V1. Rumors were in the pipeline for a while, and now that they’ve been announced, people are jumping all over the news with plenty of opinions. And as often happens when a long awaited and much hyped product is finally announced, not everyone is happy…

It comes in a rainbow of colors...

Cutting to the chase, most are disappointed in the small size of the 2.7x crop sensor (much smaller than other mirrorless cameras, such as micro 4/3rds found in Panasonic and Olympus (2x) and Sony & Samsung (1.6x). However, Nikon is introducing more choice for customers in the mirrorless scene, and seems to have targeted a specific market, which probably includes “soccer moms” and the general population. The “gimmicky” scene modes actually seem kinda fun (photography should be fun, right?), although most people are writing them off. Although minimal and traditional looking, we think the V1 is ugly with its bulging viewfinder. It has superfast autofocus which should come in handy for those shooting their kids on the playing field. Despite the lack of a proper PASM model dial, those manual modes are indeed available through menus, so not to worry there. We think that limiting the sensor to 10MP was a wise move for cleaner files (although the first samples are not entirely promising), although the mass market might prefer more megapixels.

I’m in the market for a mirrorless camera, but this one probably won’t be for me as I’m a fan of shallow depth of field, thus requiring a larger sensor and faster lenses. Anyways, stay tuned as more info is posted to this page.
