Are u interested in our monthly photo contest? If  you’ve noticed August photo contest in flickr and facebook, u

will find this big winner: Alberto Rojas. And his images are very very popular in flickr,  do u want to know his

secret skills to achieve so much attention? I’m very lucky to interview him this month. let’s see what he said.

Aputure Interview

1. Name:

Alberto Rojas

2. Hometown:

Fort Lauderdale, Florida. USA

3. Tell us a bit about yourself.

I was born in Bogota, Colombia. As a student I studied electronics engineering. In 2001, I immigrated to America…. I started in photography three years ago.

I captured this shot of my own eye, without any assistance. In it, I used 2 lenses together,

            a Nikon 55-300mm  and a 50mm/1.8, in reversal, a Nikon SB-900 speedlight, along with

camera control software. I think this is the hardest shot I have ever made.

4. How did you get started in photography?

I have loved photography my whole life. Without any knowledge of photography, I purchased some studio lights to take some photos of my daughter. I loved the results. Through the internet, I started to study everything I could find in the field of photography.

This picture of my daughter inspired me to start taking photography

to a higher level… I find something special within her gesture.

5. One camera and lens for the rest of your life…what would it be?

Since I use many lenses to suit different specific purposes, to chose one is difficult. If had to choose one, it think it would be my 24-70mm, 2.8 lens as it covers a more diverse range of possibilities. As for a camera, the Nikon D800E is my clear choice.

6. What’s the best thing about being a photographer? The worst?

When you start in photography, you see the world in a different way. Noticing details such as small gestures, colors, and patterns is like waking up to a new world. The worst part is that photography is very costly.

This last capture is my most controversial image. One either hates it or loves it.

The hidden interpretation is different for each viewer.

7. If you could shoot anything/anywhere/anyone, what would it be?

I would love to go out to a desert and photograph the Milky Way in complete darkness.

8. What’s your most memorable shooting experience? Tell us about it.

My favorite shooting experience was about six months ago. My favorite model Anita and I expended approximately 12 straight hours shooting at my swimming pool. As a result of that shoot she became my favorite all-time model. It was amazing!!

Shots like this fine-art nude is my favorite subject.

9. What’s your off-camera lighting philosophy?

My philosophy on lighting is adaptation… to simply use what you have available to get the image you want. I prefer to use a strip box.

10. Your images are always full of creative ideas. Where is your inspiration from?

My inspiration comes from my own mind. Books are a very important part of my creative process as well, plus movies and simply browsing through pictures.

This capture was eventually selected Editor Choice on  the website and

helped make me believe in myself.

11. Words of advice for aspiring photographers?

My advice to aspiring photographers is to persevere, be self-critical, to practice, and to be guided by their own instincts… and then practice more.

In this capture I fell in love the mystery in the model’s expression and the richness

of the color red.
